Holyrood Lodge

Historic Environment Scotland, Edinburgh

The small lodge sits between the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace. It was built in 1857 as part of Prince Albert’s vision for Holyrood Park and is now an Historic Environment Scotland visitor centre for the Park.

In 2017 I designed an exhibition for the Lodge that tells the story of the landscape and the wildlife in Holyrood Park. The exhibition is just 17m2 and features a cased display of objects discovered within the Park which hadn’t been on public display before, interactives, graphics and AV.

Some of the graphics are printed on magnetic sheets so that they can be changed seasonally, along with the AV content. I opted to use elm for the table tops, a beautiful timber that I’ve never used before. It was originally hoped that we could use elm cut from the Park - in the end this wasn’t possible due to the quality of the timber and a source of British elm was eventually found (sourcing good quality British elm isn’t easy!).
