Battle of Jutland Exhibition

National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth

I was the 3D interpretive designer for the Battle of Jutland Exhibition project from concept through to on-site completion.

This included creating design concepts and developing them, producing sketches, detail design drawings (CAD), written specifications, designing case layouts for 26 display cases, liaising with the client and contractors, attending site during the installation period, and snagging the completed works.

The main challenge in this project was stretching a small budget to fill a large exhibition space (approx 800m2).

The display structures are large and jagged to evoke ships coming together in battle. They carry strong, powerful contemporary images and quotes. This roots a complex and potentially dry story to the personal experiences of those who took part in the battle to engage the visitor on an emotional level. This is enhanced by a powerful AV presentation in four ‘pods’ using multiple projectors to deliver the story in short, powerful segments.

The project was led by Petrichor. All images © Jef Maytom, Petrichor
