Jorvik Viking Centre

Coppergate, York

After flooding in December 2015 caused major damage Jorvik was re-imagined, redesigned and rebuilt, opening again in April 2017.

Working for Petrichor, I designed case layouts for 26 display cases within the new Artefact Gallery, where Viking life in 10th Century York is explored through the beautiful and rare finds that were discovered in the Coppergate dig.

Artefacts range from delicate jewellery and socks to padlocks and frying pans…there is even a fossilised Viking poo!

Working closely with the Jorvik curatorial and conservation team and a specialist mountmaker I designed case layouts to show these artefacts in a new, innovate way, incorporating dramatic lighting to create a sense of movement within the cases.

The project was led by Petrichor. All images © Jef Maytom, Petrichor
